How to Search Criminal Dockets
Brooks County eServices is the county's main online hub. The County Clerk advertises Probate, Civil, and Criminal searching there. Even so, the official pages make no sweeping promises. Not every search field, live update, or document image is guaranteed. A blank result does not prove a Brooks County criminal case is absent. Nail down the offense level and court before trusting what appears on screen.
Felony matters go through the Brooks County District Clerk. It points felony searches and open requests to districtclerk@co.brooks.tx.us. The County Clerk keeps county-court misdemeanors. Class C citations belong to the issuing Justice Court or Falfurrias Municipal Court. Each office runs its own docket, even when the names look alike.
- Gather the case number, defendant name, approximate filing year, and expected offense level.
- Try the official eServices criminal category and note the court on a likely match.
- Route a felony to the District Clerk, a county misdemeanor to the County Clerk, and a Class C matter to its issuing court.
- Read settings, pleas, orders, and disposition as separate events.
- Ask the keeper for inspection, a plain copy, or a certified copy and the current fee.
Brooks Felony Docket Route
The 79th Judicial District Court handles Brooks County felonies. Its criminal docket lives with the District Clerk, not a Justice Court or the municipal court. You can visit the counter at 100 E Miller Street in Falfurrias, write to P.O. Box 534, or call 361-325-5604 ext. 4. A dedicated search email is posted too.
Email works well when eServices gives nothing clear. Include the county, court, case type, filing year, and a safe locator. Be specific: an index, a docket sheet, a filed order, or a certified record. The District Clerk does not accept fax filings. eFileTexas handles electronic filing for lawyers, but it is not a public viewer for the Brooks County criminal docket.
Call before you drive, if a hearing hinges on it. The district court page lists an Alice office address even though the Brooks courthouse sits in Falfurrias. Confirm which location serves your case.
What a Criminal Docket Shows
Think of a Brooks County criminal docket as a dated log of court activity. Entries may show the venue and stage of the charge. Filed papers, upcoming appearances, rulings, and the final result can appear as well. Field names on eServices can vary. Treat these as things to confirm rather than exact labels. Always use the real case number instead of guessing a format.
| Case number | The court's unique locator, shown here as court-assigned number. |
|---|---|
| Court and type | District felony, county misdemeanor, Justice Court Class C, or municipal Class C. |
| Charge filing | A complaint, information, or indictment and recorded offense category. |
| Settings | Appearance, arraignment, pretrial, motion, or trial dates and later resets. |
| Plea and orders | The plea plus rulings on motions, counsel, bond, or other requests. |
| Disposition | Dismissal, conviction, acquittal, judgment, sentence, or other final action. |
Even when the index is public, document links may be missing. Ask the clerk whether you can inspect or copy the filed paper.
Brooks Class C Court Split
Justice Court Precinct 1 keeps its own Class C and citation records. So does Justice Court Precinct 2. Precincts 3 and 4 merged into Precinct 1 in 2023. An old Precinct 3 page is still online. Do not let it pick your clerk.
Falfurrias Municipal Court handles city traffic, parking, ordinance, code-enforcement, school-attendance, and other Class C cases. Its current page lists 205 E Allen Street and 361-325-5039. The city posts no public docket form. Call with the citation number and appearance date; county eServices does not cover these cases.
| Offense level | Brooks court | First keeper |
|---|---|---|
| Felony | 79th District Court | District Clerk |
| County misdemeanor | Constitutional County Court | County Clerk |
| JP Class C | Issuing Justice Court | JP clerk |
| City Class C | Falfurrias Municipal Court | Municipal clerk |
Stages on a Criminal Docket
A felony docket usually opens with the charging event, then gathers appearances, counsel activity, settings, motions, a plea or trial, and the result. Misdemeanor and Class C records can move through a shorter path. Brooks plea forms offer guilty, nolo contendere, or not guilty choices. Judge or jury settings appear where available. Nolo contendere simply means no contest.
Docket flow: Filing › Arraignment › Pretrial › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing
Treat the sequence as a reading aid. A reset can leave the old date in the history. A new one controls. A motion stays a request until the judge rules on it. The signed judgment or order beats a short event label every time.
Note: Confirm a current court date with the clerk. A prior setting may still show after the criminal docket is reset.
Brooks Criminal Entry Terms
Local forms do confirm plea and conditional-resolution paths. But Brooks County has published no full list of docket codes. Never assign a meaning to shorthand unless the clerk or a filed document backs it up.
- Setting
- A scheduled appearance, motion, pretrial event, or trial, not a final result.
- Continuance or reset
- A move to a later date. The prior date can remain in the history.
- Disposition
- The final outcome, such as dismissal, conviction, acquittal, or another closure.
- Deferred disposition
- A conditional resolution based on court approval and completion of terms.
- Expunction
- A statutory process that can require courts and agencies to act after a qualifying order.
Warrant, bond, plea, and payment entries need context too. A receipt does not establish dismissal or any final disposition. Contact the Brooks County court that owns the case.
Which Court Holds Criminal Dockets
The Brooks court split follows the offense. The District Court hears felonies. The Constitutional County Court takes county-level misdemeanors. Justice Courts and Falfurrias Municipal Court handle Class C matters within their authority. The Texas Courts trial-court overview explains these levels in plain terms.
The split matters for searches and copies alike. A County Clerk search will not cover a District Clerk felony request. A JP payment page is not a case search for every precinct. Check the citation, bond paper, notice, or result for the court name. Texas has no single statewide trial-court portal, so the local keeper is your best fallback.
When Brooks Searches Show Nothing
A Brooks County docket search that comes back empty is rarely a dead end. The case may sit in a different court. Or the name and case number may not match what you typed. Older files have not all been scanned. Some items stay off the public index for lawful reasons. Rather than hammering the search box, narrow a clerk request by court and year. Stop feeding more personal data into repeated searches that return nothing.
Each Brooks County office has its own route. The District Clerk takes felony search requests by email. The office also serves mail and counter traffic. The County Clerk provides a counter, a mailing address, a phone line, and an email contact. Justice of the Peace and municipal clerks run separate lines entirely. When you reach any of them, ask about public inspection, electronic delivery, accepted payment, and certified-copy costs. Neither clerk page posts a complete current fee table for court copies. Both list weekday service with a lunch closure, and books close before the public day ends. Call ahead about current hours. A records request or copy order can take longer than a quick status question.
For a mailed request, name the right clerk and use that office's post-office box. Confirm the payment method and whether the office wants return postage. One hard rule stands out: the District Clerk's page expressly rejects fax filings. If you go the email route, keep the ask narrow. Skip the driver's license number and other sensitive identifiers unless the clerk offers a secure channel.
Brooks County publishes no subscription feed and no countywide drop-box docket service. A vendor payment screen can take money for one precinct. It may still show nothing about the full docket or whether the matter is closed. After paying, get the court's recorded status or disposition. A receipt is not the final case record.
An appeal goes to the Fourth Court of Appeals. OCA CARD serves as a directory and statistics tool, not a party-level criminal docket.
Public Access and Sealed Criminal Dockets
Public access has real limits. Adjudicative case records are not treated the same as agency records. That is the rule under the Texas Public Information Act. The OCA open-records policy sorts case records, judicial records, and other government records into separate buckets. Send any request to whichever office keeps the Brooks criminal case you want.
Juvenile material may be confidential. Sensitive identifiers can be redacted. An expunction changes lawful access. The District Clerk posts an agency list updated after the 2025 statutory change. Do not try to slip past these limits through a different office.
Key access rules:
Texas Family Code Chapter 58 restricts specified juvenile records.
Code of Criminal Procedure Chapter 55A governs expunction.
Texas Rule of Judicial Administration 12 governs covered judicial records while distinguishing case records.
Brooks Criminal Copy Requests
Know what you are asking for before you call. An index only confirms that a matter is recorded. A docket sheet lists the events in a case. A plain copy reproduces a public document, and a certified copy carries the clerk's certification. Access rules, delivery methods, and fees can differ for each product.
Give the clerk the case number, the court, the offense level, and the approximate year. Add the item you want and a safe reply address. If a filing holds protected data, ask whether a redacted copy is available. The Brooks County case search covers more lookup paths.
